First, I sincerely thank every Veteran from the bottom of my heart for their service and sacrifice! Thank you to those who paid the ultimate price for our freedoms, those who have a place reserved at the POW/MIA table, and all other veterans who sacrifice in a million other ways. A big thank you is also extended to their families. Some of whom have endured losses greater than anyone should suffer. Join me today, and extend a thank you to a Veteran you know!
My experience with Veterans First:
Today I am spreading the word about an amazing program at Las Positas College. The Veterans First Program has been helping former service members transition into college life for years now. It’s time you know about it if you don’t already! When I finished my active duty commitment, I was a full time parent and student. I attended college for a year without much support from my school in understanding my VA benefits. When my son’s Autism became very apparent, I spent the next 3 years heavily invested in Early Intervention. College went straight to the back burner. When the opportunity to pursue a teaching degree presented itself, my heart sunk realizing I would not be able to use my VA benefits. The VA will only cover tuition at resident rates. I was returning home, without orders, so I would need to wait a year.
Enter the Veterans First Program… Was there any way to use my GI Bill? My residency lapsed simply because of being on orders as a military spouse. Immediately they were up to the challenge. It was evident that they were as passionate about getting me started as I was. Such a relief after giant waves of panic! Frustratingly, my residency lapsed before the Military Spouse Residency Relief Act passed. However, Veterans First found out that I could fill out an extra form proving I went to high school in California. Their research allowed me to be eligible to use my GI Bill immediately.
What Veterans First does:
Veterans are assisted in getting set up for priority registration, evaluations, and academic counseling. That’s in addition to reviewing education plans, and helping vets submit for VA GI Bill benefits. Veterans First also answers any question you have about using your GI Bill. Oh, but that is just GI Bill stuff! Other amazing ways they aid veterans, include:
- Study room: where tutoring is available, as well as computers, and free printing.
- Lounge area: between classes, this is a great place to relax with other veterans, grab a snack, play some games, or watch a movie.
- Special Programs: resume workshops, financial coaching, therapy dogs, textbook loan program, and free yoga.
- Help with: enrolling for VA healthcare benefits, information about financial aid and scholarships.
I have only so much of your time to talk your ear off about how much good they do, so I end with this: Share this information with a Veteran who is considering college, returning home from service, or struggling with online school. It’s a great way to help them out!
