I have to give it to Livermore homeowners, they really have this whole remodeling thing down. Take a peek into most of these older homes and you’ll find some of the nicest renovations around. One of the reasons I really love my job. But every now and again, BAM!!! It just hits you straight in the face! Good money spent on really bad improvements!
So, back to me and my face. 🙂 I was showing a house recently that had a step down into another room and they kept the flooring the same throughout, making it blend right into one another. In this case it had beautiful flooring and step downs can be pretty common in homes, but it gets the bad design award for safety reasons. As you can imagine, I tripped and well, you know the rest. Embarrassed, yes, but hey, better me than my client! Unfortunately this hasn’t been the first time.
Now some things you’re just going to inherit with any house. It could be the very reason you fell (no pun intended) in love with it in the first place, but it’s what you do with it that can make all the difference.
You may have heard that the same flooring throughout can make the home feel larger but, this is a scenario where an exception should be made. Instead go with two different flooring coverings that complement each other or you may end up replacing teeth.
When it comes to any remodeling, take a step back and look at the project as a whole. First and foremost, it should be safe for everyone. Even I will admit that sometimes it takes trial and error. I’ve made my share of bad design choices too. If you’ve already pulled the trigger, don’t panic, most things can be helped with the right furniture placement and decor. In this case, throw down an area rug to give your eye something to go to. Lastly, I always highly recommend that you Call me! I love helping out and giving design advice!
