Don’t we all wish we could skip the hardships of college and magically be rich and employed? Now unless I find a genie in a bottle REAL soon, I better hit those textbooks hard! College can be intimidating, but with the right mindset and tools; it can be fun! With that said, I will enlighten your mind with tips to make college more enduring so grab your pen and paper for “How to Survive College 101“!
Let’s address the first element that comes with the word college and that is “tuition”. How are you gonna pay for college? Textbooks, gas money, parking permits and all the rest will add up and create a big number. Trust me, I know firsthand. Well don’t scream and freak out. The first tip I can give is to look into federal work-study. Usually you can apply for a job on campus that can help your financial needs. For example, I know for my campus that includes office work. Here’s a link to give more insight!
Food! My favorite topic ever! So with hard work and long studying, you’re inevitably going to get cravings. This can sadly become expensive and haunt you with the fear of the “Freshman 15”. No worries! For cravings I would suggest finding a simple cooler and stocking it with foods that won’t perish. Students are so lucky that Las Positas Community College is surrounded by fast food places, high end restaurants and glorious establishments. I often find myself buying affordable snacks like cashews or dried fruit at Trader Joe’s to keep in my backpack and cooler. This can save the few bucks you would’ve spent on the overpriced snacks from the Starbucks on campus.
Don’t want to store food like a bear in hibernation? No problem at all because there should be healthy alternatives near your campus. In the radius of Las Positas Community College, I’ve found multiple Subways and Quiznos but also have discovered some healthy and delicious places like Casbah Cafe. Escape your midterm stress and have a quaint lunch date at a nearby restaurant! Find new places and who knows, maybe you’ll become a fan of Mediterranean style food (shout out to Casbah Cafe’s Mediterranean menu)! Casbah Cafe is extremely popular for its positive and pleasant vibes! The community absolutely loves their gorgeous paintings and beautiful decor. Their menu is known for being healthy, organic, and having no sugar or MSG which is amazing for those who have specific dietary needs. This restaurant is definitely the place for good “brain food”!
I thank my mom for this tip- I opened a college credit card! Student loans and credit cards were a “no-go” as my mom said multiple times, but upon further investigation we decided to go forth with a college credit card. Here are some reasons why. First off, credit cards aren’t all that scary if you have a job or means of paying back the balance on your card. As long as you can pay off your balance then you’re good! Secondly, for a young student this could be easy means of building credit to your name. I mostly use my credit card for gas, Starbucks or Subway; so that’s easy credit earned once I pay off the balance. Lastly, you won’t have to hold up the line trying to find that spare penny or dollar.
I could go on with more tips, but this one I hope resonates the most. Find a nice place where you can decompress and relax. Stress or lack of sleep can seriously put a damper on your day and your grades, so take an hour to treat your mind and body. Surviving that hard class won’t be possible without taking care of yourself. Located on Portola Avenue, you can find solace and peace at Cayetano Park where its hills look over the entire area and its playground is clean and well kept.
This is one of Livermore’s newer parks and is very beautiful. This park is extremely well taken care of and very safe, so it was no surprise when I noticed the many families and children having fun in the playground. I can take an hour or two to relax and escape the chaos of midterms, exams and homework.Beautiful hills that overlook the area and for dog lovers like me, a dog park! Seeing happy dogs can be an instant stress relief, just sayin!
